Problems faced by women in food enterprise of Tumkur and Bangalore urban districts, Karnataka, India

Abstract: Women play a very important role in the development of family, community and society at large. Women contribute to development not only through remunerated work, but also through a great deal of unremunerated work. In the process of entrepreneurship women face various problems such as multiple roles of women entrepreneurs, lack of experience in planning, lack of training in enterprise, followed by inadequate working capital, lack of adequate infrastructure, either no and less access to skilled labourers, lack of advertising and branding of the products, competition from branded products and lack of skills in sales promotion are the major planning, production and marketing problems faced by women entrepreneurs. Hence, the study was designed to elicit information on problems faced by women in food enterprise of Tumkur and Bangalore Urban districts, Karnataka. Entrepreneurs were identified with the help of developmental departments and other organizations working towards organizing Entrepreneurship Development Programmes (EDPs). The data was collected based on sample survey method and categorised into small, medium and large based on capital investment. The result revealed that, in Tumkur and Bangalore Districts majority of the entrepreneurs expressed lack of structured market facilities as a severe problem followed by poor price for the product, responsibility of performing household activities, higher transportation and income derived is too low. In Bangalore none of the entrepreneurs encountered problems like lack of child care facilities, caste system and seasonal problems. Hence, to overcome the problems faced by women entrepreneurs, there is a need to give appropriate training, support from family members, provision of sufficient working capital, by the government, infrastructure in the form of industrial plots and sheds to the provided by the state run institutions.
