Occurrence of entomopathogenic nematodes in Thanjavur districts of Tamil Nadu

Abstract: A random survey was conducted in and around Agricultural college and Research Institute, Eachangkottai. A total of 45 composite soil samples were collected from different crop ecosystems viz., field crops, fruit and vegetable fields and fallow land at AC&RI, Eachangkottai, Thanjavur and nearby villages. In the present study C. cephalonica was used for culturing EPN isolates. The eggs of C. cephalonica were collected from the Department of Entomology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. About 2 kg of coarsely ground or broken bajra (Pennisetumglauchum L.) grains taken in plastic tray was inoculated with 1cc of C. cephalonica eggs. This was covered with a muslin cloth for about 25 days. Out of 45 samples, EPN isolates present in 4 samples viz., Banana, Maize, Bottle gourd and Bhendi. Based on the EPN infected insect larva color (brown) and microscopic images it is concluded that Steinernema species.
