Effect of weed management practices on weed dynamics and performance of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.)

Author(s): S Bharty and Praveen Kumar

Abstract: A field experiment was conducted at Birsa Agricultural University, Jharkhand during kharif 2014 to evaluate the influence of integrated weed management with pre-emergence (PE) and post-emergence (POE) herbicides on weed dynamics and productivity of turmeric. Among the weed management treatments imposed, at 90 and 150 Days after planting (DAP), metribuzin 0.7kg/ha PE followed by(f.b.) fenoxaprop-p-ethyl 67g/ha + metsulfuron 4g/ha at 45 DAP recorded reduced total weed density i.e.,66.96 and 54.67% and reduced total weed dry matter i.e.,44.24 and 52.27% with higher phyto-toxicity i.e.,7.67 in turmeric plants. On the other hand, atrazine 0.75kg/ha PE f.b. straw mulch at 10 DAP f.b. hand weeding at 75 DAP also recorded significantly lower weed dynamics with low phyto-toxicity i.e., 0.67 in turmeric plants. Thus, it can be concluded that in case of atrazine 0.75kg/ha PE f.b. straw mulch at 10 DAP f.b. hand weeding at 75 DAP, the availability of nutrients are enhanced which leads to positive results in respective of yield attributes of crop like primary rhizomes (24.05%), secondary rhizomes (32.05%) and yield (50.54%) compared to hand weeding at 25, 45 and 75 DAP. So, application of atrazine 0.75kg/ha PE followed by straw mulch and hand weeding at 75 DAPmay be practiced for better crop growth which leads to higher productivity of turmeric owing to better weed control.
