Review of Adverse Effects Nitrates and Nitrites in Drinking Water
Author(s): Rajesh Bhagwat Jadhao
Abstract: Nitrate and nitrite contamination of drinking water poses significant risks to human health and environmental sustainability. Predominantly arising from agricultural fertilizers, livestock waste, sewage, and industrial effluents, excessive concentrations exceed WHO limits, causing methemoglobinemia, thyroid and reproductive disorders, and elevated cancer risk, while also promoting eutrophication in aquatic systems. Effective management requires sustainable practices such as eco-friendly fertilizers, optimized irrigation, regular water monitoring, and public awareness. Interdisciplinary research and global cooperation are essential to refine safety standards, develop cost-effective remediation strategies, and ensure access to clean drinking water for current and future populations. The present review aims to provide an overview of the adverse health and environmental effects of nitrates and nitrites in drinking water.
