Comparative study of thermal properties and EOS for Benzene (C6H6) and Chloroform (CHCl3)

Author(s): Uday Kumar

Abstract: The comparative study of thermal properties and Equations of State (EOS) for Benzene (C₆H₆) and Chloroform (CHCl₃) focuses on analyzing the key thermodynamic characteristics of both compounds and evaluating their behavior under different conditions using two distinct EOS models: Van der Waals and Soave-Redlich-Kwong equations. This study examines several thermal properties such as critical temperature, critical pressure, boiling point, specific heat capacity, and enthalpy of vaporization. Benzene, with a higher critical temperature and boiling point, exhibits a more stable liquid phase compared to chloroform, which has a lower critical temperature and pressure, making it more volatile. In terms of EOS, the Van der Waals equation, while offering a simplistic approach, shows limitations in accurately predicting the behavior of real gases, especially under high pressure and temperature. On the other hand, the Soave-Redlich-Kwong equation provides a more refined model, capturing the nuances of intermolecular interactions and offering a more reliable prediction for real gas behavior in a range of conditions. The comparative results highlight the importance of selecting an appropriate EOS for different substances and the role of intermolecular forces in determining the physical properties of liquids and gases.
