Estimates of general and specific combining ability for yield and yield contributing traits in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Author(s): Kaveri Chawan, NV Kayande and Swati G Bharad

Abstract: To determine general and specific combining ability variances for yield and yield contributing traits in wheat, four lines and eight testers were crossed in line x tester fashion. The ANOVA revealed that the differences induced by crosses were significant for all of the characters. This confirmed that the crossings for these traits had significant genetic variation. Female parent AKAW 3717 and male parents AKAW 4630, AKAW 4731, and AKAW 4730 have been recognized as good general combiners for grain yield and its component traits. Thus, these parents should be included in further hybridization programme. The highest significant sca effect for grain yield was recorded by the cross AKAW 3717 x AKAW 4731 followed by AKAW 3717 x AKAW 4730. The cross AKAW 3717 × AKAW 4731 and AKAW 3717 x AKAW 4730 depicted high mean performance, high magnitude of useful heterosis and both parents involved revealed high GCA effects.
