Evaluation of anthelmintic efficacy against gastro-intestinal parasites in small ruminants and detection of anthelmintic resistance by conventional technique

Abstract: A study for evaluation of in vivo anthelmintic efficacy against Gastro-intestinal nematode in small ruminants was carried out in Beetal goats in an organized farm Goat Research Station, Assam Agricultural University, Brynihat and sheep in a private farm in Bongaigaon district of Assam. Detection of anthelmintic resistance was done by FECRT using modified Mc Master method. Number of animals considered for the study was 28 in each species (7 nos. in four groups). Resistance was tested for Benzimidazole (Fenbendazole), Salicylanilide (Closantel) and Imidathiazole (Levamisole). The recommended dose rates of the drugs under study were viz. Group I: Fenbendazole @ 5mg/kg body weight; Group II: Closantel @ 10 mg/kg body weight; Group III: Levamisole @ 7.5 mg/kg body weight and Group IV: Infected untreated control. Faecal EPG was done on 0th (Pre-treatment), 10th and 14th (Post-treatment) days. Anthelmintic resistance was detected against all the three tested drugs in goat and sheep based on lower 95% Confidence Limit.
