Feasibility testing and evaluation of manually operated paddy drum seeder in vertisol of central India

Abstract: A field study was conducted to evaluate the operational, agronomic, and economic performance of the TNAU-designed manually operated paddy drum seeder in Vertisol (black soil) under wetland conditions, in comparison with conventional manual transplanting methods practiced by farmers. The manually operated paddy drum seeder demonstrated an effective field capacity of 0.18-0.20 ha/h with a field efficiency of 73%, requiring only three labours for its operation, compared to 25-30 labours typically engaged in transplanting. Furthermore, the use of pre-germinated seeds and omission of nursery raising and transplanting significantly reduced the cost of cultivation to Rs. 450-600/ha, offering a direct cost saving of Rs. 6500-7500/ha. Although the grain yield recorded with the manually operated paddy drum seeder (51600 kg/ha) was marginally lower than that of manual transplanting (52900 kg/ha), the substantial savings in labour and operational costs render the technology highly advantageous for small and medium-scale farmers, particularly in regions experiencing labour scarcity. The findings affirm the manually operated paddy drum seeder's potential as a sustainable, low-cost mechanization solution for rice cultivation in vertisol soil of central India’s regions.
