Abstract: Leaf area index is an important bio-physical parameter and acts as an indicator of crop stress. Several methods have been followed to estimate LAI either directly or indirectly. Vegetation indices based on the combinations of two or three spectral bands provide an effective way to retrieve LAI and other biophysical parameters. LAI and vegetation indices based yield models showed higher accuracy and it could be applied to predict rice yield more than a month before harvest. This study was conducted to compare the LAI values from field observations with LAI derived from MODIS data. The LAI value ranges from 1.6 to 4.6 across fourteen field observation through a smartphone application. Pocket LAI found to be better than the satellite-derived MODIS LAI pixel values that ranged from 0.8 to 2.4. The overall agreement between the observed values and MODIS LAI values were 35.35%.
