Variation studies in seed physical and germination attributes of red sanders (Pterocarpus santalinus) genetic resources

Author(s): M Karthick and KT Parthiban

Abstract: The present investigation was carried out at Forest College and Research Institute, Mettupalayam, Tamil Nadu to identify the best half sibs of Pterocarpus santalinus across its natural distribution of Tamil Nadu for further collection of seeds for afforestation and breeding purpose. A detailed inventory of natural red sanders growing areas of Tamil Nadu was done and a total number of 30 plus trees were selected based on the morphological features. Seeds collected from the CPT’s were used to evaluate pod physical and germination attributes. The progenies varied significantly due to Pod length, Pod width, 100 pod weight, Germination percent, Germination value, Peak value, Mean daily germination, Speed of germination and Vigour index. Considering all the seed characters investigated, the progeny viz., FCRI PS2 consistently expressed superiority. Hence this progeny can strongly be recommended for mass multiplication.
