Genetic variability and selection of Population suitable for mechanical harvesting In f3 generation of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.)

Author(s): Pithiya KR and Javia RM

Abstract: An experiment was carried out to estimate the genetic variability and selection of mechanical harvestable population from 32 F3 population of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) during Rabi 2017-18 under randomized block design with three replications. Analysis of variance reveled significant difference for all ten character studied indicating presence of sufficient amount of genetic variability among the generation for all the ten characters studied. However, narrow differences observed between the PCV and GCV in certain cases indicated that these characters were less influenced by the environment. Moderate to high magnitude of genotypic coefficient of variation and phenotypic coefficient of variation was observed for characters like seed yield per plant, number of pods per plant and 100-seed weight. High heritability coupled with high genetic advance as per cent of mean was observed for 100-seed weight, seed yield per plant and number of pods per plant which may be contributed to the preponderance of additive gene action and selection pressure could profitably be applied on these character for improving the seed yield. Selection of segregating materials from F3 population GJG 0922 × Phule G 08108, ICP 06-11 × JG 11 and ICCIL 85213 × NBEG 47 were more suitable for machine harvest and good seed yield per plant.
