Abstract: Seed morphology and bio-molecular activity at germination initiation stage was considered for qualitative assessment that may appropriate for quality seed production with advantageous breeding to develop efficient strains. High significant variability was noticed utilising 20 rice genotypes. The parameters like seed length; breadth, L/B ratio, seed volume, 1000 seed weight, carbohydrate, water absorption potential (WAP), peroxidase and α-amylase were liable to specify the selection strategy. The genotype V8 (Bidhanmoti 1) showed prominence in seed length, L/B ratio, 1000 seed weight with occurrence of α-amylase though high genetic variability was noticed among genotypes for all characters. Coefficient of variation provided a relative measure on variance among different traits. GCV was high (more than 20%) for seed length, L/B ratio of seed, seed volume, 1000 seed weight with peroxidise activity. High heritability (H2 %) combined with high genetic advances (GA %) was observed for seed length, 1000 seed weight, peroxidise, and WAP. Moreover, the considerable characters showed strong positive correlation with each other. Therefore, these characters were most significant seed characteristics and selection based on these traits would be authentic for rice genotypes grown under West Bengal.
