Abstract: A field experiment was conducted during the kharif season of 2018-19 in the research farm of College of Agriculture, Central Agriculture University, Imphal to study the effect of nitrogen on growth and yield of direct seeded black aromatic rice (Oryza sativa L.). The treatments comprised of two establishment methods (broadcasting and line sowing), three levels of nitrogen (40, 60 and 80 kg N/ ha) and two time of nitrogen application(1/3rd at basal, 1/3rd at active tillering and 1/3rd at panicle initiation and 1/3rd at 3-4 leaf stage, 1/3rd at active tillering and 1/3rd at panicle initiation) which were laid out in a Factorial Randomized Block Design (FRBD) with twelve treatment combinations and replicated thrice. Among establishment methods line sowing (T2) performed better than broadcasting (T1). In the case of nitrogen level, all growth, yield attributes, and yield were performed well under 80 kg N/ ha (N3) followed by 60kg N/ ha(N2). While the lowest values were found under40 kg N/ ha (N1). Between the two establishment method S1 (1/3rd at basal, 1/3rd at active tillering and 1/3rd at Panicle initiation) performed better. Among the various growth parameters plant height, no. of tillers per hill, no. of tillers per square meter and leaf area meter were noticed maximum with the association of Line sowing + 80 kg N/ha +1/3rd at basal, 1/3rd at active tillering and 1/3rd at Panicle initiation (T2N3S1). Similarly, grain yield (kg/ha), straw yield (kg/ha) and harvest index (%) were noticed maximum with the association of the same treatment combination Line sowing + 80kg N/ha +1/3rd at basal, 1/3rd at active tillering and 1/3rd at Panicle initiation stage (T2N3S1).
