Abstract: In the present investigation, the mutagenic effectiveness and efficiency of gamma ray, electron beam and combined effect of gamma ray + EMS was studied in the cluster bean variety MDU 1. The seeds of cluster bean variety MDU 1 were mutagenised with the increasing doses of (100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600,700Gy) of gamma rays, electron beam and (100+20mM EMS, 200+20mM EMS, 300+20mM EMS, 400+20mM EMS, 500+20mM EMS, 600+20mM EMS,700+20mM EMS Gy) of Gamma ray with EMS combined treatment. The effectiveness and efficiency was determined by accounting lethality, injury and sterility in M1 generation of mutagenized seeds and frequency and spectrum of chlorophyll mutations in M2 generation. The increasing doses of gamma ray, electron beam and combination of gamma ray with EMS decreased plant survival, seedling height and increased pollen sterility. Three types of chlorophyll mutant’s viz., xantha, striata and chlorina were screened in M2 progeny. It was observed that the frequency of mutations increased with increasing doses of mutagen. The mutagenic effectiveness and efficiency was increased with increasing doses. Thus the higher doses of mutagen like gamma rays, electron beam and Gamma ray with EMS combined treatment were effective and efficient than the lower doses of gamma rays in cluster bean variety MDU 1.
