Assessment of community knowledge, attitude and practices on milkhygiene and milk borne zoonosis in tribal area of the Surajpur district of Chhattisgarh

Abstract: A cross sectional study was conducted in Surajpur District of Chattisagarh to assess dairy farmers milk hygiene practices and awareness on milk borne zoonosis. Data were collected from 160 farmers from 7 selected villages and Surajpur city using semi-structured questionnaires and direct observation. The results of socio-demographic study showed that 120 respondents comprise of male, while 40 are female of different age and education level. In the study area all respondents have a separate house for animal. Regarding barn cleaning, 55% respondents clean barn once a day and rest 45% clean twice a day and no one clean thrice a day. Most of respondent (90%) cleans the barn before milking. While 20% do not clean before milking. About 62.5% respondents washed their hands with water only and about 37.5% used water with soap, none of them use warm water. The majority of respondents (92%) were not taking precautions to avoid sneezing and coughing over milk while handling milk. The result shows that 95% respondent uses normal water without soap for udder washing whereas, 5% use soap with water.In these studies most of the respondents(95%) use aluminium cans for collection of milk whereas 5% use plastic container. In respect to cleaning method practices in study area show that 60%respondent wash milk containers with warm water and detergent while 40%respondent wash containers with normal water and detergent. Based on the finding of this study farmer awareness about milk borne zoonosis was only20%. In this study area about 11.87% respondents were aware of disease, tuberculosis, 20% respondent were aware about mastitis and 8.75% were aware of brucellosis. Respondents were asked if they was aware of pasteurization mean of prevention of milk borne zoonosis, then only 15% respondent were aware. While 85% respondent believes, as boiling as a mean of prevention of milk borne zoonosis. The study concludes that milk hygiene practice and awareness about milk borne zoonosis is very poor.
