Anthropometric assessment and knowledge regarding menstrual hygiene among rural adolescent girls of Ludhiana District in Punjab

Abstract: The present investigation was aimed to find out the knowledge regarding menstrual hygiene and level of nutritional status of among rural adolescent girls. The present study was conducted in Issewal, Purian, Chappar, Aliwal and Meharna Kalan in central plain zone Ludhiana district of Punjab, A total of one hundred sixty five girl students studying in government high school were selected for the study. Anthropometric assessment was ascertained the growth and nutritional status of rural adolescent girls. Self structured checklist was prepared to assess the level of knowledge regarding menstrual hygiene among rural adolescent girls, which was developed by the team of scientists under All India Coordinated Research Project on Home Science. Data was collected through interview of girls. One pre test was conducted to know the pre intervention level of knowledge regarding menstrual hygiene of rural adolescent girls and after providing interventions one post test was conducted to know the effects of interventions. The result indicated that most of the girls were found to underweight. The reason for their less height and weight could be that majority of the girls belonged to low soci-economic status families where the diet pattern was very simple. Majority of the girls use old soft clothes as sanitary napkin and had low level of knowledge of menstrual aspects. After intervention regarding their nutritional status adolescent girls showed increase in their mean scores height 152.4 cms weight 42.12 kgs and gained knowledge about menstrual aspect.
