Genetic variability, heritability and correlation in advanced red gram genotypes

Abstract: Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp) is the second most important crop among pulses which contributes majorly to the protein nourishment of vegetarians. Increased red gram production is possible with high yielding varieties suitable for specific conditions. This is achieved by studying the variability of the existing gene pool. In the present study, 14 red gram genotypes were evaluated in North coastal zone of Andhra Pradesh for yield and related traits during Kharif, 2017. High variability was observed for all traits except pod length. High heritability coupled with high GAM were observed for days to 50% flowering, plant height, No. of branches/plant, No. of pods/plant and grain yield which indicates preponderance of additive gene action. Significant positive association of grain yield with No. of branches/plant and No. of Pods/plant is advantageous for simultaneous selection of economic traits.
