A study on forest based livelihood security for tribes in Kolli hills
Author(s): V Keerthana and TR Shanmugam
Abstract: The study has been conducted to measure the livelihood security of tribes in kolli hills. A livelihood comprises the capabilities, assets (stores, resources, claims and access) and activities required for a means of living. Tribal people are dependent on forest resources for their livelihoods. The concept of livelihood security is increasingly essential in the development debate. This paper outlines a framework for analysing livelihood security of tribes, defined here in relation to five key indicators (Education, Food, Health, Habitat and Economics). Livelihood security has become CARE’s basic framework for the analysis of the range of formal, informal, organisational and institutional factors that influence sustainable livelihood outcomes. In conclusion, the paper briefly considers some of the practical, methodological and operational implications of a livelihoods security approach.
