Impact of cluster frontline demonstrations in productivity enhancement and dissemination of mustard production technology

Abstract: The extent of adoption of improved agricultural technologies is a crucial aspect under innovation diffusion process and the most important for enhancing agricultural production at a faster rate. Large number of technologies evolved in the field of agriculture is not being accepted and adopted to its fullest extent by the farmers. The gap between recommendations made by the scientists and actual use by farmers is frequently encountered. The present study was carried in 2017-18 to assess the impact of CFLDs on productivity enhancement of mustard crop. A total of 66 demonstrations were conducted in three clusters over an area of 30 hectares in district Fatehabad. The yield data and economics of demonstration and check plots were recorded and analysed for calculation of gap analysis, costs and returns. The results revealed that under demonstration plots, mustard yield was substantially higher than check plots (farmer’s practice). On overall basis, 11.5 per cent increase in yield was recorded in demonstrations plots over check plots. The average extension gap was observed 2.16 q/ha, which emphasized the need to educate the farmers through various extension means for adoption of improved agricultural technologies. The average technology index of three clusters was 26.39 per cent. Favourable benefit cost ratio proved the economic viability of intervention. From the above findings it can be concluded that the production and productivity of mustard crop can be increased through cluster demonstrations by motivating the farmers for the adoption of scientific production technologies which were demonstrated in the CFLD plots.
