Effect of superabsorbent polymer on morphological characters of Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon L.) under water stress condition

Abstract: The two main sources of water to agriculture is rainfall and groundwater but due to the drifting climatic conditions, changes occur in the monsoon pattern which leads to an unpredicted drought condition. As per the State ground and surface water resources data centre, 19 out of 32 districts in Tamil Nadu are in red category, with depleting water levels. So in order to handle the upcoming crucial water scarcity a study was planned to investigate the effect of superabsorbent polymers (SAP) on the growth of Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon L) under drought condition with different irrigation intervals. The experiment was designed as factorial experiment in a randomized complete design with two factors and two replications. Hydrogel at different concentrations of 2.7 g, 5.4 g, 8.1 g, 10.8 g, 13.5 g and a control with three levels of irrigation intervals viz., 2 days once (control), 4 days and 6 days were imposed in turfgrass. Under water deficit condition media incorporated with 13.5 g of hydrogel at 4 days irrigation interval recorded improved growth in Cynodon dactylon L.
