Abstract: Soil testing methods exclusively for organic farming are currently unattended. Under this background, an attempt was initiated to develop suitable extractant for assessing inorganic P pools in organic farming soils. A number of organic acids elaborated by phosphate solubilizing microorganisms were employed against conventional Bray extractant as check. Out of four organic acids, 2% citric acid revealed 235-575% larger size of inorganic P pools in organically managed soils. Regression analysis revealed that Bray-P and organic matter content could hardly explain the total P of organically managed soils (R2-.024). Whereas, 2% citric acid and double lactate extractable P together as well as organic matter content were strongly correlated (R2-0.45) with total – P content of organic soils. Thus, 2% citric acid and double lactate may putatively be identified as suitable extractants for estimating inorganic P-pool. This protocol will be helpful for organic certifying agencies and the personnel attached to soil testing laboratories for catering soil testing service to the organic farmers.
