Growth, yield and economics of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea Coss.) as affected by Phosphorus and Sulphur levels

Author(s): Ravindra Nath and Mohammad Kalim

Abstract: A field experiment entitled “Growth, yield and economics of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea Coss.) as affected by Phosphorus and Sulphur levels.” Was carried out at the Agronomy Research Farm of Allahabad Agricultural Institue, Allahabad (U.P) during rabi season of 2008-09. The expermint was laid out in R B D, having three levels of phosphorus (20, 40 and 60 kg ha-1) and sulphur (20, 30 and 40 kg ha-1) each with three replications. The phosphorus and sulphur were applied through SSP and gypsum, respectively. Indian mustard varity Varuna was sown on 26th October 2008 with the seed rate of 4.0 kg ha-1. The plant height, dry weight, siliqua plant-1, seed yield and stover yield increased significantly at 60 kh phosphorus and 40 kg sulphur ha-1 over lower doses of phosphorus and sulphur. Application of 60 kh phosphorus and 40 kg sulphur ha-1 gave the higher plant height (98.41, 98.83cm), dry weight (16.63, 16.75 kg), No. of siliqua plant-1 (559.33, 555.44), No. of seed siliqua-1 (12.79, 13.23), seed yield (15.14, 15.31 q ha-1), stover yield (24.57, 34.97 q ha-1) and net return (32,891.6 Rs ha-1), respectively. Oil content increased significantly with the application of 60 kg phosphorus ha-1 and 40 kg sulphur ha-1 (38.55, 37.33).
