Quality of life of agriculture labours

Abstract:
Introduction: Quality of life is tied to perception of meaning or feeling of well-being by the individual. It shows the extent to which people happiness requirements are met i.e. those requirements which are a necessary (although not sufficient) condition of anyone’s happiness those without which any member of the human race can be happy. India being an agricultural based country, farmers and agricultural labourers play a major role in it. It is important to know the quality of life of this part of population, so that proper measures can be taken to uplift their quality of life.
Objective: Present study was intended to assess quality of life of agricultural labourer.
Methodology: Quality of life of 30 subjects working in Agricultural University Dharwad was assessed. Out of 30 subjects, 15 were men and 15 were women. Quality of life was assessed u WHOQoL –BREF scale. WHO QOL-BREF: Standarized scale developed by World Health Organisation.
Results: Eighty per cent of the labourers were in the age of above 30 years and 50% were males and 50% were females. About 57% of labourers were illiterates, 17% were completed their primary education, 10% completed their high school, 13% completed their matric level and 3% completed PUC level. About 100% of individuals have scored medium score for physical domain, 80% scored medium score for physiological domain, 46% scored medium for social relationships, 80% scored medium for environment domain. Overall scores depicts that majority (80%) of agricultural labourers belong to medium category of quality of life.
Conclusion: Quality of life of agricultural labourers was neither high nor low, they fall under medium category. Though they belong to medium category, measures are to be taken to improve their quality of life.
