Estimation of heterosis for growth, yield and quality parameters in Ridge gourd [Luffa acutangula Roxb]

Abstract: Thirty hybrids derived from 10 lines and three testers were evaluated in a RCBD design and analysed by line x tester fashion in order to estimate heterosis for growth, yield and quality parameters in ridge gourd. Highly significant standard heterosis was found in Crosse ERG-1 x Deepthi (60.03%) for vine length at 45 days after sowing, DMRG-3 x PSN (39.88%) for vine length at 90 days after sowing, DWD local x CO-1 (48.70%) for number of leaves at 90 days after sowing, DMRG-3 x PSN (40.38%) for number of branches at 90 days after sowing, DWD local x CO-1 (-19.84%) for days to first male flowering, CKM local x CO-1 (-34.09%) for node to first male flowering, DMRG-1 x Deepthi (-35.19%) for days to first female flowering, IC-92637 x CO-1 (-10.64%) for node to first female flowering, DWD local x CO-1 (-13.93%) for days to first harvest, ERG-4 x CO-1 (-6.08%) for days to last harvest, ERG-2 x PSN (-50.87%) for sex ratio, HSN local x Deepthi (41.20%) for fruit length, DWD local x CO-1(22.05%) for fruit diameter, DMRG-1 x CO-1(66.85%) for per cent fruit set, DWD local x CO-1(90.30%) for average fruit weight, DWD local x PSN (20.87%) for number of fruits per vine, DWD local x CO-1 (143.01%) for fruit yield per vine, DWD local x CO-1(128.03%) for fruit yield per plot, DWD local x CO-1 (128.01%) for fruit yield per hectare, CKM local x Deepthi (69.70%) for rind thickness, HSN local x Deepthi (48.98%) for flesh thickness. Among all the thirty hybrids crosses DWD local x CO-1 (128.01%), ERG-2 x Deepthi (119.09%), ERG-1 x Deepthi (112.09%), ERG-2 x PSN (85.97 %) and DMRG-25 x Deepthi (61.41%) showed highest standard heterosis for total yield per hectare in order of merit. Thus were identified as best five hybrids for their yield potentiality.
