Abstract: The present investigation deals with antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) peel. Various extracts of pomegranate peel were prepared by Soxhlet extraction method using hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and methanol as solvent. Methanol extract was subjected to column chromatography to isolate 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) as major compound. It was chemically transformed into two derivatives viz. furan-2, 5-dicarbaldehyde and 5-chloromethylfurfural. The peel extracts, 5-HMF and its derivatives were tested for their antimicrobial potential against Klebsiella sp. and Pseudomonas aeruginosa using disc diffusion method. The extracts and compounds were found to be more effective against Klebsiella sp. as compared to Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Among all the extracts, methanol extract exhibited maximum antimicrobial potential. 5-HMF and its derivatives were also tested for their antioxidant potential by 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. Among 5-HMF and its derivatives, 5-HMF showed maximum antimicrobial as well as antioxidant potential.
