Phenotypic characteristics and body measurements of goats in Umred Tahsil of Nagpur district

Abstract: The present investigation was carried at Tahsil of Nagpur district during the year 2017-18, to study the Phenotypic characteristics and body measurements of local goat. Five villages viz., Gaosut, Nawegaon (Sadhu), Seo, Tirkhura and Thana were randomly selected. They are medium to small size animals having varied coat colour ranging from brown mixed with black or white (37%), convex forehead, straight horn in backward direction, pendulous ear, and medium tail. Majority of the local goats did not have wattles and beard. The average measurements for height at wither, body length, chest girth, head length, ear length, tail length (cm) and body wt (kg) are as 54.67 ± 0.22, 36.65 ± 0.31, 55.02 ± 0.27, 11.02 ± 0.08, 13.05 ± 0.14, 11.02 ± 0.09, 13.62 ± 0.21 in 0 to 6 months; 13.62 ± 0.21, 43.35 ± 0.24, 61.1 ± 0.24, 13.05 ± 0.11, 14.01 ± 0.17, 12.03 ± 0.11, 18.06 ± 0.10 in 6 to 9 months; 63.90 ± 0.21, 50.19 ± 0.36, 65.38 ± 0.26, 15.03 ± 0.10, 16.03 ± 0.20, 14.02 ± 0.07, 20.03 ± 0.23 in 9 to 12 months; 66.00 ± 0.21, 59.46 ± 0.30, 69.09 ± 0.20, 16.87 ± 0.12, 18.68 ± 0.19, 15.03 ± 0.08, 25.86 ± 0.21 in 12 to 18 months; 74.94 ± 0.50, 62.52 ± 0.27, 74.25 ± 0.27, 17.26 ± 0.12, 20.78 ± 0.30, 16.06 ± 0.10, 34.51 ± 0.30 in adult animals of the age more than 18 months respectively.
