Screening of mungbean genotypes against pulse beetle Callosobruchus chinensis and evaluating the biochemical basis of resistance
Author(s): S Sekar and R Nalini
Abstract: Fifty two genotypes of green gram were screened for their resistance against C. chinensis during 2015-2016. The genotypes PDM-54, GM 4, KM-14-53 and KM-14-54 received the least number of eggs which ranged from 3.00 to 16.50 numbers and recorded prolonged mean developmental period. In these genotypes there was no adult emergence hence suitability index and survivorship were nil. The genotypes VGG-05-001, VGG-007- 002, RM 612, VBN 3, MEGA, VGG-099-021 and KM-14-57 showed susceptibility with high adult emergence, shortest developmental period, high survivorship, high suitability index and higher grain weight loss. Based on the suitability index, the 52 genotypes were grouped into four categories as four resistant, 11 moderately resistant, 18 moderately susceptible and 19 susceptible genotypes. There existed a highly significant positive correlation between resistance to C. chinensis and total sugar and protein content of grains whereas, negative correlation was obtained with phenol, oil content and trypsin inhibitor activity.
