Synthesis of 4-aryl-2-hydroxy-4,6,7,8-tetrahydro-chromenes-5-ones and their isolation and characterization by spectroscopic method

Abstract: Diethyl esters of 2-(4-chloro-benzylidene)-malonic acid 1a (a = 4- Cl- C6H4) and 2-(2-Methyl-benzylidene)-malonic acid 1b (b = 2-CH3- C6H4) reacted with 1,3-cyclohexanedione (2a, R = H) and 5,5-dimethyl-1,3-cyclohexane (2b, R = CH3) respectively in the presence of alcoholic sodium ethoxide to give the corresponding products of 4-(4-Chloro-phenyl)-2-hydroxy-4,6,7,8-tetrahydro-chromene-5-one(3a),4-(4-Chloro-phenyl)-2-hydroxy-7,7-dimethyl-4,6,7,8-tetrahydro-chromene-5-one (3b), 2-Hydroxy-4-o-tolyl-4,6,7,8-tetrahydro-chromen-5-one (3c), and 2-Hydroxy-7,7-dimethyl-4-o-tolyl-4,6,7,8-tetrahydro-chromen-5-one (3d). The structures of the compounds 3a-d were confirmed by their ultraviolet, infrared, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, mass spectra and elemental analyses.
