Crop improvement studies in Sapota

Author(s): YB Dharmik, AV Zope and OS Rakhonde

Abstract:

The project “Crop Improvement Studies in Sapota” was undertaken at the Regional Fruit Research Station, Katol, Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Agricultural University, with the objective of evaluating different sapota (Manilkara zapota) genotypes for growth, yield, and fruit quality. The long-term trial, initiated in 2006-07, was conducted at Plot No. 02 with three genotypes planted in 1994, at a spacing of 10 × 10 m, using five trees per genotype under a non-replicated design.

During the 2016-17 assessment, significant variation was observed among genotypes. The variety Kalipatti exhibited the maximum plant height (5.31 m), plant volume (150.89 m³), highest number of fruits (2072.80 per tree), and superior fruit quality parameters, including total soluble solids (TSS) of 18.20% and sugar content of 8.50%. Additionally, Local-1 genotype recorded superior fruit weight (104.12 g) and fruit length (6.13 cm), indicating its potential for improvement in fruit size traits.
