Characters association and their dissection through path analysis for cane yield and its component traits in sugarcane genotypes under water logging condition

Author(s): Rupesh Kumar Agrawal and Dr. Balwant Kumar

Abstract: Characters association and path analysis for yield and its component traits were studied in sixteen sugarcane genotypes including two checks which were planted in RBD with three replications at Paddy Block, RAU, Pusa, Samastipur, Bihar during 2012-13 under low land area where its grand growth phase coincides with water-stagnation depth 40-45 cm for three months. The highly significant positive association of cane yield at phenotypic level were observed with cane diameter (0.598) followed by plant height at 150 days (0.581), number of millable canes (0.568), plant height at 240 days (0.558), plant height at 360 days (0.523), single cane weight (0.427) and germination percent at 45 days (0.384). The cane yield also exhibited positive and significant association with CCS per cent at harvest (0.354), pol % at 12th month stage (0.322), number of shoots per ha at 120 days (0.301) and purity at 11th month stage (0.290). Maximum positive direct effect on cane yield was exhibited by single cane weight( 0.5337) followed by Brix at 12 & 11th month (0.5155 & 0.4648), number millable canes (0.3706), plant height at 150 days (0.3223) and CCS per cent at harvest (0.2737) while maximum positive indirect effect showed by germination % at 45 days(0.9666) via number millable canes on cane yield followed by number of shoots at 120 days (0.9005) via number millable canes on cane yield, germination % at 45 days( 0.8563) Pol % at 12th months on cane yield, number millable canes (0.8341) via pol % at 12th months on cane yield and cane diameter(0.7106) via single cane weight on cane yield. Thus, traits plant height at 240 days, plant height at 360 days, cane diameter, single cane weight, pol % at 12th month stage, brix % at 11th month stage, brix % at 12th month stage, CCS percent at harvest, single cane weight and number of millable canes, showed positive direct effect towards cane yield have to be given importance in selection process for improvement in yield, since they had positive correlation with cane yield and positive inter-correlation among themselves. Dissection of association into their direct and indirect effects showed that highest positive direct effect on cane yield is exerted by the traits like germination % at 45 days, number millable canes, single cane weight and stalk diameter in this study, so be taken into consideration in clonal selection programme for evolving improved sugarcane genotypes.
